On May 18, 2019, Illinois football player Bobby Roundtree suffered a devastating setback.
The Junior defensive tackle was diagnosed with “a serious spinal injury,” after a swimming incident. Not only did this abruptly end Roundtree’s Junior season, but it has disrupted his everyday life.
Roundtree hasn’t been able to walk since the day of the injury. However, he has not let this setback crush his spirits.
On Friday, May 22nd, the defensive tackle held a Zoom teleconference with multiple reporters, answering questions for around 45 minutes.
The Largo native explained his weekly routine of balancing school, therapy, and his new diet.
Mike Pearson of fightingillini.com explains how every Monday and Friday, Roundtree makes the short trip to the University of Illinois' campus to attend two-hour therapy sessions at Illinois' renowned Disability Resources & Educational Services.
Roundtree has surprised his therapists with the progress he has made thus far.
"They didn't expect me to be where I'm at this soon," Roundtree shares. “When somebody tells me I can't do something, I'll prove them wrong. It might take me a couple of tries, but I'm going to do it."
The defensive tackle has also prioritized his health.
Roundtree said that he had lost 70 pounds since suffering the injury. He had made his way back up to the 260-pound mark, but says he is now on a diet.
"I'm actually on a diet now, trying to trim down a little bit," the Illini standout shares.
Roundtree has used this setback as an opportunity to set personal goals for himself.
"Five years from now, I see myself walking again and traveling around with my Mom," he shares.
Roundtree also shared his career goals with reporters. He aspires to either work in the coaching field, or open up his own rehabilitation facility.
"I want to do something that's going to help people who have been through this," Roundtree said. “I want to show everyone that anything is possible, no matter your situation."
Lastly, Roundtree expressed his gratitude towards Illini nation and all the individuals who have shown him support.
"Everybody donating and doing fundraisers, that means a lot. I don't have a million dollars to help me through this. People giving their last pennies to help me out, that's just a lot of love right there. I appreciate everybody for that,” Roundtree told reporters.
